NoiseIf your nerves are easily frayed by noise, you will, for sure, suffer a lot in trying to gain some sleep in Vietnam, as the noises, not just any noise but a whole lot of noises, just never seem to stop. At night there is most often a competing cacophony from motorbikes, discos, cafes, karaoke clubs and restaurants; if your place is near any or all of these, it may be miserable in bed. So don't forget to pack along your earplugs.
Beggar Fatigue
You may frequently find little boys, at ages of 8 to 10, with their baby sister in their arms, tugging on your shirt sleeve when you are ordering in a restaurant or buying souvenir from hawkers.
This is common in Vietnam and some other parts of Asia. Don't give them money or anything that can be sold, even though they have a distended stomach and their hungry eyes never move from your full plate or pocket. If you really wanna help, bring them to local organizations that work with disadvantaged people or buy them some food directly to be sure they are the only beneficiaries.
Theft
The Vietnamese are convinced that their cities are full of criminals. Street crime is common in HCMC, Nha Trang, and on the rise in Hanoi.
Don't have anything dangling from your body, if you are not ready to part with them, including bags and jewellery.
Keep an eye out for the Saigon cowboys – drive by thieves on motobikes – they specialize in grabbing handbags and cameras from walking tourists.
Avoid leaving things on table or seat while you are eating. For even a moment, they may grow legs and vanish.
Be cautious of the ‘Taxi girls' who approach you with a big hug, more often, and ask if you'd like ‘a good time'. Then they suddenly change mind and depart, along with your cell phone and wallet.
Despite all this, don't be over worried. Though crimes are there and request your caution of it, Vietnam is not any worse than what you'd expect anywhere else. Don't let the assumption that everyone is in bad intentions ruin your holiday.
