Hoi An legendary Night Picture choosen by: Mrs.Rosy Black Places in Vietnam III Hoi An – A Simple Happiness

Once a sleepy riverside village, Hoi An now is quite definitely a tourist town with a great number of hotels, restaurants, bars, souvenir shops and tailors. Despite this air of unreality, Hoi An's charm and flavor diffuses.

A stroll down the street is usually more relaxed here than in other parts of Vietnam. The local People's Committee periodically clamps down on touts, and closes the Old Town to cars. Hiring a bike is also a nice way to explore this city.

On the roadside are complexes of Chinese-style architectures. Inside these houses, you can see drawings of plum blossom, orchid, bamboo and chrysanthemum (typical Chinese decoration) as well as poetic couplets on the wall. But the people live inside are 100% Vietnamese. Because of the past relations with China, those traditions and custom are rooted deep herein. However, as the innovation of Chinese lantern, Hoi An has added more of its own flavor into them.

Every month on the full moon is “Hoi An legendary Night”. Motor vehicles are banned from the Old Town, which is transformed into a magical land of silk lanterns, traditional food, song and dance, and games in the streets.

In October and November, Hoi An has problems with flooding, especially in areas close to the waterfront. Aside from that, Hoi An is definitely a highlight of any trip to Vietnam, and emphatically the most enchanting place along the coast, a spot worth a longer stop.
