VIETNAM TRAVEL GUIDE - GETTING AROUND

World Travel Guide Asia Vietnam Getting Around Picture choosen by: Mrs.Rosy Black Getting around Vietnam Road

Trains are also quite popular, especially overnight trains in a soft sleeper. Vietnam's Reunification Express runs the entire coast between Hanoi and HCMC, with stops along the way in Hue, Danang and Nha Trang. In addition, the train is the main way to get between Hanoi and Sapa in the north.

Traffic drives on the right. There is a reasonable road network. However, roads are often in poor condition and may be inaccessible during the rainy season. Driving in Vietnam can be a frightening experience as the normal rules of highway discipline are not followed by most drivers.

Taxis

When taking a Taxi use one of the main companies such as Vinataxi (bright yellow) or Mai Linh (white and green), and you shouldn't have a problem. Make sure you have the address written down, as most drivers won't speak English and Vietnamese is notoriously hard to pronounce. Don't use smaller, unmarked taxis that is where you encounter difficulties.

Cyclos

Agree on the price before you depart. Cyclo journeys normally cost around 20,000 VND per hour.

Driving on your own

Chauffeur-driven cars are available for hire. Motorbikes are for rent in major cities such as Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh City and Dalat. You can buy one at very low price in any of these cities.

Documentation: An International Driving Permit and a test (taken in Vietnam) are mandatory before driving. However, foreigners' motorbike- licenses are hardly checked by the police

Hitching

It is never entirely safe in any country in the world, and we don't recommend it. Travellers who decide to hitch should understand that they are taking a potentially serious risk. People who do choose to hitch will be safer if they travel in pairs and let someone know where they are planning to go.

Boat

There are enormous number of rivers that are at least partly navigable, but the most important by far is the Mekong River and its tributaries. Scenic day trips by boat are possible on rivers in Hoi An, Danang, Hué, Tam Coc and even HCMC, but only in the Mekong Delta are boats used as a practical means of transport.

Boat trips are also possible on the sea. Cruising the islands of Halong Bay is a must for all visitors to north Vietnam. In the south, a trip to the islands off the coast of Nha Trang is popular.

In some parts of Vietnam, particularly the Mekong Delta, there are frequent ferry crossings. Don't stand between parked vehicles on the ferry as they can roll and you could wind up as the meat in the sandwich.
