Though by no means easy or comfortable, it is possible to sail from Australia, and some other smaller Pacific islands to New Zealand. Hitching rides or crewing on yachts are all available. Try asking around at harbours, marinas, and yacht and sailing clubs. Popular yachting harbours in NZ include the Bay of Islands and Whangarei (both located in Northland), Auckland and Wellington. March and April are the best months to look for boats heading to Australia.

By Air
There's a number of competing airlines servicing NZ and a wide variety of fares to choose from if you're flying in from Asia, Europe or North America, though eventually you'll still pay a lot for a flight unless you jet in from Australia. NZ's excessive popularity and plenty of year-round activities mean that almost any time of year airports can be crowded with throngs of inbound travelers. So as they always remind you: book well in advance to avoid disappointment.

The high season for flights into NZ is during summer (December to February), with slightly less of a premium on fares over the shoulder months (October/November and March/April). The low season generally tallies with the winter months (June to August), though this is still a busy time for airlines ferrying ski bunnies and powder hounds.

Common one-way fares to Auckland cost approximately US$650 from Singapore, US$850 from Kuala Lumpur, Bangkok and Hong Kong , and US$775 from Tokyo. Going the other way, return fares from Auckland to Singapore cost around NZ$1350, and around NZ$1600 to Kuala Lumpur, Bangkok, Hong Kong and Tokyo, depending on the airline.

If you book early enough, you may pay under AU$200 for a one-way fare on a budget carrier from either Sydney or Melbourne to Auckland, Christchurch or Wellington. More common prices are from AU$260 to AU$300 one-way. You can fly into Auckland and out of Christchurch to save backtracking, but you may not get the cheapest fares with this itinerary.

Return fares from Vancouver to Auckland cost between C$1600 and C$1900 via the US west coast. From Toronto , fares cost around C$2000. One-way fares from NZ start at around NZ$1200 to Toronto and NZ$1100 to Vancouver.

And that from the US west coast to NZ start around US$1100/1300 in the NZ winter/summer; fares from the east coast start at US$1700 in both seasons. Return fares from NZ to the US west coast are around NZ$2000; to New York NZ$2500.

Arrival
On the air, you will be asked to fill out the usual Immigration Arrival Card and a Customs and Agricultural Declaration.

On the ground, there usually are two lanes – “nothing to declare” and “carrying loot”, all travel documents will have a quick check at the immigration counter. Don't ever try to smuggle anything illegal, for the Customs people are as sharp-eyed as any in the world and the justice system is extremely strict upon this part.

Getting In
No matter where you arrive - Auckland, Wellington, or Christchurch - your options are the same for getting into the city center: Taxi, shuttle or airport coach.
The basic and best way is to take the airport shuttle buses outside the terminal building and you will easily find an array of waiting coaches.
Theoretically, airport-to-city costs: Auckland $20, Wellington and Christchurch $15.
If you are staying at a downtown hotel or hostel, the airport coaches are a slightly slower but similarly slightly cheaper option.
In Auckland a taxi to the city normally costs around $50-60 depending on the time of day and therefore the traffic delays. But if the traffic is seriously delayed you'd better prepare for a horrific bill. May pay to sort that out with the driver first. In Wellington a cab to the city may cost around $45.
