NEW ZEALAND TRAVEL GUIDE - MONEY

World Travel Guide Oceania New Zealand Money Picture choosen by: Mrs.Rosy Black Practical Infomation abuot NZ Money & Cost
Costs
Recently, the NZ dollar has rapidly increased its value, and burgeoning tourism has seen clear prices rise with demand. However, if you're visiting from Europe or North America, it's still a fairly economical destination.

Activities like jetboating generally top expense lists – planning before you spending. Gourmets will find food to be surprisingly pricey and without necessarily being of better quality.

A budget of $130 to $150 per day (per person, travelling as a pair) only allow you to do some sightseeing, eat out once or twice a day and stay in cheap motels, not including car hire or activities. Kids obviously means greater expense, but museums, cinemas, and tour and activity organizers usually offer discounts for them, and there are plenty of open-air attractions available for free!

Staying in places for longer periods and/or travelling in a group will lower your costs.

Tipping
In NZ staff is not live on tip. So all you need to pay is that stated on the bottom of your bill. But tipping is universally welcomed, that is to say, it's totally acceptable to reward good service and tip between 5% and 10% of the bill is the norm.

Moneychangers
It usually causes no difficulty to change foreign currency or travellers cheques at banks throughout NZ or at licensed moneychangers such as Travelex in the major cities. Moneychangers can be found in all major tourist areas, cities and airports, and conveniently tend to stay open until 9pm.

Taxes & Refunds
The Goods and Services Tax (GST) is a flat 12.5% tax on all domestic goods and services. There's no GST refund available when you leave NZ.

Travel Ducuments
Passport and Visa
All visitors need a passport. As far as visa-free is concerned, that all depends on your nationality and duration of stay.

The need for a visa shall be waived if you come for holiday no more than three months (UK = 6 months) and you are a citizen of any of the following countries:

Australia, Austria, Belgium, Canada, Czech Republic, Denmark, Finland, France Germany, Greece, Iceland, Ireland, Indonesia, Italy, Japan, Korea (South), Kiribati, Lichtenstein, Luxembourg, Malaysia, Malta, Monaco, Nauru, Norway, Netherlands, Portugal*, Singapore, South Africa, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, Thailand, Tuvalu, USA**.
*Portuguese passport holders must have the right to live permanently in Portugal.
** Includes US nationals from American Samoa and Swains Island.

In order to qualify for the visa waiver you must:
^hold a valid ticket to a country to which you have a valid right of entry, and have sufficient money to support yourself during your stay (about $NZ1000 per month);
^hold a passport valid for three months beyond the date you are leaving New Zealand;
^only wish to visit NZ for the time granted on arrival (if you wish to visit for a longer period you will have to apply for a Visitor's Visa).
