Weather in NZ
WeatherWind is the frequent visitor of New Zealand. Some say it freshens this land, some say blasts. Anyway, this cool, damp wind will consistently blow in.
On the South Island, the Southern Alps act as a barrier, creating a wet climate on the western side, and a dry climate on the eastern side. The winds which become quite dry after a long journey move on east, gathering heat and speed as they blow downhill and cross the Canterbury Plains. In summer, it can be really hot and fierce.
On the North Island, rain is more often the main weather. Unlike the south, the rain shadow is not as pronounced. The annually average rainfall in this area is around 1300mm.
On both islands, it's drier in the east than in the west. And it's usually a few degrees cooler on the South Island than the North Island. Wherever you are, keep an eye on the rapidly-changed weather.
When to go
November to April, which are considered as warmer high-season, are right for outdoor exploration.
Summer, December to February, is full of food and wine festivals, concerts and sports events.
Winter, June to August, is skiing high season.
A real holiday only comes when you travel without coincidence with school holidays (particularly mid-December to early February) and public holidays.
