2. Ciqikou Ancient Town
Perched on a hill overlooking the Jialing River, Ciqikou Ancient Town dates back almost 1700 years. At its height in the Ming dynasty, it shipped its namesake ceramics, Ciqi , from the town pier. Every building has been preserved or restored for tourists, but behind the shops and restaurants, the residents air their laundry and stir rice porridge over charcoal flames.

3. Gele Mountain Martyrs' Memorial
The sites of the Gele Mountain Martyrs' Memorial relate to how in 1943 the USA and Chiang Kaishek signed a secret agreement to set up the Sino-American Cooperation Organisation (SACO), under which the USA helped to train and dispatch secret agents for the Kuomintang. The chief of SACO was Dai Li, the ruthless head of the Kuomintang military secret service, and US Navy Commodore Milton Miles served as deputy chief.

4. North Hot Springs
The North Hot Springs, nestled at the base of Jinyun Mountain, was once an extremely exclusive, ancient medical retreat and still houses a 5th-century Buddhist temple and gardens. Take bus 502, 503 or 504 to Beibei and then catch bus 520.

5. People's Hall
On your way out of the Three Gorges Museum, take a look across the square at the People's Hall. When built in 1954, it was the tallest building in town and symbolised Chongqing's rebirth from backwater war casualty to modern metropolis.

6. Zhazi Dong
The largest of the 20 prisons on Gele Mountain is Zhāzǐ Dòng . It was here that the highest-ranking prisoners were held under the most punishing conditions.

7. Tianci Hot Spring
Tiāncì Hot Springs offers the hottest mineral-rich soaks (57°C) in lovely landscaped private pools. About 20 minutes by bus from the North bus station (around Y24 ) or by taxi (Y60).
