GENERAL INFORMATION TRAVEL GUIDE

World Travel Guide North America Canada Ottawa General Information Ottawa_Overview
Picture choosen by: Mr.David Birch Ottawa Overview Ottawa had a humble beginning as a small lumber town. It was eventually designated Canada’s capital in 1857 by Queen Victoria. Ottawa has now grown into a virbant urban centre overlooking the Gatineau Hills of Québec and nestled between the River Ottawa, Rideau Canal and River Rideau. The impressive Parliament buildings create an air of European elegance, with neo-gothic spires and turrets stretching skyward high above the River Ottawa.

The ByWard Market area, originally known as Lowertown, is the focal point for Ottawa’s French and Irish communities. The city’s early heritage is evident in the proliferation of Irish pubs in the area. The Uppertown developed around the seat of government with its wealthier neighbourhoods, embassies and politicians.

Being the nation’s cultural and intellectual capital and centre for visual and performing arts, Ottawa has numerous museums, galleries, two universities and a community college. It is a very desirable place to live and work, with green spaces, outdoor activities and an easygoing lifestyle. In this multicultural community, bilingual skills in French and English are required in the government and service industry and restaurants serve cuisine heavily enhanced with French influence.
A wide range of outdoor recreational activities are available across the seasons, from winter skating on the frozen Rideau Canal to summer cycling on extensive recreational paths, or kayaking and canoeing in the city’s waterways.
