Edmonton started with grid structured roadways, however, during the 1950s and 1960s, the roads became less grid-like, but they are still easy navigable. The roads in the new subdivisions have more curves, cul-de-sacs and named streets. A current city map is highly recommended if you are visiting these areas.

By taxi
The most prominent cab companies are:
• Yellow Cab, 780-462-3456
• Capital Taxi, 780-423-2425
• Co-op Taxi, 780-425-2525
• Barrel Taxi, 780-489-7777

All Edmonton taxi companies offer 24/7 service. From the last weekend in November to New Year's Eve on weekends, Operation Red Nose offers cab rides for drivers who have been partying and prefer not to drive themselves (780-421-4444).

By public transit

Bus
The Edmonton Transit System (ETS) is a safe, efficient and inexpensive public transportation system. During peak hours, buses run as frequently as every 15 minutes. Outside of peak, the frequency drops to every 30 minutes or even one service per hour (to industrial areas or far-flung suburbs). Major bus routes operate from as early as 5am to as late as 1am, while a handful only operate until 8pm or 9pm, and only run during peak hours (6am – 9am and 3pm – 6pm). Moreover, some bus routes do not run on Sundays. For more information, you can call 780-496-1611.

LRT
Edmonton was the first North American city with a population of less than 1 million (during that time) to develop a Light Rail Transit (LRT) system. The LRT is part of the Edmonton Transit System, which also manages the buses. During peak hours on weekdays, LRT rains run every 6 minutes. Otherwise, the frequency is every 7 to 12 minutes depending on the time of the day. On Sundays and holidays, trains run every 15 minutes throughout the day. Trains operate from around 5.30am to 1.30am. On Sundays and holidays, the LRT stops running past 12.30am.

Fares are charged at $2.50 for adults and $2.25 for youths and seniors. Day passes can be bought for $7.50 regardless of age group. A pack of 10 tickets is sold at $21.50 (adults). These tickets can be purchased at ETS online store, automated fare vending machines (located at all LRT stations) or at the ETS Customer Information Centre (located on the pedway level of Churchill Station).

By bicycle
There are many cycling routes that allow for all-year cycling. However, winter cycling can be challenging for those who are unaccustomed to Edmonton weather. These marked routes, combined with a flat terrain, low snow or rainfall and low traffic compared to other major city, make Edmonton an easy city to travel by bicycle.
