Goiânia is the capital and the largest city in the Brazilian state of Goiás. With a population of 1,265,394 people, it is the second largest city in the Central-West Region and the thirteenth largest in the country. Its metropolitan area has a total population of 2,063,744, being the eleventh largest in Brazil.
Goiânia, unlike most cities in Brazil, was completely planned. The city was founded on October 24, 1933 by then Governor Pedro Ludovico to be the new state capital and center for all state matters. Prior to this date, the state capital was the town of Goiás. Goiânia is considered the greenest city in Brazil and the second only to Edmonton in the world .
